Could this help?

Could a jaw pain assessment help?

Jaw pain and facial discomfort can arise from the jaw muscles, joints, teeth, bite, habits or other health conditions. Assessment helps identify an appropriate dental pathway and when another practitioner should be involved.

You may wish to discuss

  • Your jaw feels tight, tired or sore, particularly after waking
  • You clench or grind your teeth during the day or night
  • You experience jaw clicking, catching or intermittent locking
  • Your mouth opening feels restricted or uncomfortable
  • You have headaches, facial soreness or tenderness around the chewing muscles
  • Your teeth or restorations show signs of heavy wear or repeated fracture

What care may involve

There is no single treatment for every jaw symptom. Following assessment, Dr Lisa Liu can explain the options that are clinically appropriate for you.

  • Advice and habit awareness for daytime clenching and jaw loading
  • A custom occlusal splint where protection or symptom management may be appropriate
  • Review of tooth wear, bite forces and contributing dental concerns
  • Discussion of other clinically appropriate treatment options during your private consultation
  • Monitoring, further investigation or referral when symptoms require broader care

Personalised care

The right pathway begins with a diagnosis.

Jaw pain, clenching and TMJ symptoms may overlap, but they do not always share the same cause. Your examination guides whether advice, a splint, another treatment option, monitoring or referral is appropriate.

What happens at your assessment?

  • Listen: discuss when symptoms began, what makes them better or worse and any relevant dental or medical history
  • Assess: examine the teeth, restorations, bite, jaw movement, joints and surrounding chewing muscles
  • Explain: discuss the likely contributors, limitations of dental care and suitable management pathways
  • Plan: agree on appropriate treatment, review, investigation or referral rather than assuming one solution

Important limitations

Jaw clicking, headaches, tinnitus, restricted opening and facial pain can have different causes. Dental treatment cannot be recommended safely without assessment, and no treatment can guarantee complete or permanent symptom relief. Urgent or unusual symptoms may require medical assessment or referral.

Common questions

Questions about jaw pain, bruxism & tmj assessment.

Clear information is part of good care. These answers are a starting point for your conversation.

What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint itself. TMD is a broader term for disorders involving the jaw joints, chewing muscles and related structures. An assessment helps clarify which structures may be contributing to your symptoms.

Can clenching or grinding cause jaw pain?

Clenching and grinding can overload the chewing muscles, teeth and jaw joints and may contribute to tightness, soreness, headaches or tooth wear. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so assessment is important.

What symptoms should I mention?

Tell us about pain, tightness, clicking, catching, locking, restricted opening, headaches, facial soreness, tinnitus, worn teeth and when the symptoms occur. Also mention previous treatment and relevant health conditions.

Will I need a night guard or splint?

Not everyone does. A custom splint may help protect teeth and may assist selected symptoms, but suitability depends on the findings and it does not guarantee that clenching or grinding will stop.

Are other treatment options available?

Yes. Depending on the cause and your clinical findings, Dr Lisa Liu may discuss advice, a custom splint, monitoring, further investigation, referral or other clinically appropriate options during a private consultation.

What happens if my jaw locks or I cannot open normally?

Contact the practice for guidance. Persistent locking, significant restriction, trauma, swelling, neurological symptoms or severe pain may require prompt assessment and possible referral.
